John Henry's Story.

John Henry Brown was born in Knutsford, Cheshire in 1900, one of six surviving children of John Thomas (a foreman railway porter) and Sarah Ellen Brown of 3, King Street, Knutsford.

Due to his age, John enlisted late in the war. He did so at Altrincham recruiting centre, joining the Kings (Liverpool) Regiment as Private no. 87151, but soon was transferred into 'D' Company, No. 3 Section of the 46th Machine Gun Corp (Infantry) as Private no. 146739.

John died of wounds on the 18th October 1918, just 24 days before the armistice was signed.

On that fateful day:

Johns service records no longer exist so it has proven impossible to say when and where he was wounded. We do know that in the final days of the war his Battalion was engaged in the final push against the Germans in the Artois region of France. The family were told that John had been shot through the neck and died a few days later.
